'Heaval Happens
As I was driving home tonight, I came to the conclusion that it's been about four weeks since I posted something. Generally, when I post, it is because I know the Lord has been dealing with me about something, or He has something to say (sometimes it is both). The question of what to write about has been in and out of my thoughts this entire time, but I never really felt a leading...until today.
Like I said, I was driving home. I began to think about things in my life recently, and my first thought was, "Man, I did not see that coming." Just like a big pothole in the road as you're driving at (I was going to say top speed, but...) the speed limit. You know what I mean. In trucks or SUV's, you don't tend to notice the potholes unless they are huge! But when you're in a car, lower to the ground, if you hit one of those potholes, you could do some damage to your car. Our response, no matter what vehicle we are in, is generally, "Man, I did not see that coming."
Those potholes can come different ways, of course. Some are caused by too much rain, too much salt, too much anything eroding the concrete or asphalt slowly. Or quickly it seems sometimes - one day it's smooth, the next day, BAM! Bump in the road.
Other potholes develop gradually. There's a bridge, not too far from my house, that has been slowly deteriorating for over a year. Last year, torrential rains caused the creek to swell so high, that the water reached the bottom of the bridge and weakened it on the bottom. This created a pothole in the middle of the bridge (which was unsuccessfully "filled in"). It's a pothole in reverse, I think. The top started to sink down, and the only proof that I saw was a slight bump from my truck going over it. Gradually over the next few weeks the hole deepened. This year, the entire bridge is sinking down because of the intense heat from this summer. Now, my truck makes a terrific bump going over that bridge every morning. I know that soon, my bridge will be shut down for repairs. Some upheavals in your life are like this pothole - below the surface, gradually growing deeper, but still causing problems on the surface.
It doesn't matter what kind of pothole you hit, the devastation is the same. Big bump and possible big damage. What I love about the Father is that He is always waiting right where we are to pick us up. No matter what upheaval happens in our lives, He's right there in it with us. When we are traveling at (okay, I give...) top speeds, He's right there as we are flying through the air. He's right there as our car bounces back to the ground. If we're paying attention, He even yells out to us, "POTHOLE!" He's even there when we miss the landing and roll our vehicle into the median.
He always told us, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deut. 31:6 & 8, Joshua 1:5, and Heb. 13:5)
Nothing catches Him off guard. Then when everything is settled back down and smooth again, He is there to help with whatever problem comes next. I've always heard all my life that God never promised that you'd have no problems, but He did promise that He would always be there to help you through. I pray that you never forget that.
This week: Support the people who have seen upheaval in their lives recently. They need the prayer!
