Spillage
Today, I came home and discovered that I forgot to turn off the water to the pool last night. Because it's been so hot here in Oklahoma, the water in the pool evaporates very quickly! So, I was putting water in to fill it back up. And I forgot about it until today when I came home from work. Did I mention that I put the hose in last night? All I can say is my parents are going to have a very green part of the lawn around the pool pump. Spillage!
When I called my dad to tell him, he laughed at me and said, "You're not having any luck with water recently, are you?" (If you read last week's blog, you will remember that I flooded the kitchen and laundry room last week.) Oddly enough, I didn't laugh back (although it was funny. I mean come on. How often does this happen? Two weeks in a row? Really?). Actually, as soon as he said it, I opened my mouth to say, "God's just showing me that I'm overflowing in the Word." Hmmm... That's not your typical response.
I didn't get the chance to say it. It just surprised me that the thought would be there just when I would normally laugh off the situation or make a silly comment. So, I kept thinking about it. As I pulled out the hose to backwash the pool (yes, I did have to drain the water out), I decided to get a bucket for the most unfortunate side of the pool. It has only dirt and dried grass on the west side (seriously, it's been really hot). Personally, I think the trees are a little stingy; they don't share water very well. So, I found a bucket and started dumping pool water on the dry ground. For as long as I can remember, the Lord has always spoken to me while I work. I took the water and splashed it on the ground, bucket after bucket. And it occurred to me that this is how our lives should be: full of the Word to overflowing so that we have to take bucketfuls and pour it out on the dry places around us. And I kept filling it up and dumping it on the dry ground. More Word for you... more Word for you... and you... and you...
And let's not forget that there is a hose that has been constantly pumping out water the entire time I was dumping buckets on the dry places. That hose is the constant outlet of Word that spills no matter where you are. That's what you're designed to do. Out of their bellies shall come rivers of living water! You have to fill up everyday. Not just everyday in the sense of doing a duty, but everyday with fresh revelation! I remember when the Word seemed boring to me, but it gets better! Just ask my Facebook group (Through the Bible in 120 Days - join us!). You just have to remember that the Word does not return void (It always has something to say to you). Then you spew it out of your mouth and act on it and display it for everyone everywhere to see. Just like that hose.
BUT then you get to go into the dry places and give them some relief, too. Because they need it just as much as anyone. These are the people you don't normally see everyday of your life. Maybe in another city or country. Possibly on another street. I don't know about your life, but I will bet you are thinking of somewhere in particular right now.
So, by now, my back yard looks like it's been masquerading as a water fun park all day. And the Lord didn't stop speaking there, but the rest of it is personal. I get it, Lord. You're doing great things (He doesn't know how to do anything else). But I think my parents would appreciate it if I didn't flood their backyard or kitchen or anything else anymore, Lord!
This week: read your Bible.
