Holding On Tight
Two weeks ago, I decided to start looking for a holiday job. I have only been working part time (30 hours per week) at my day job, and I wanted a little extra cash to set aside for so many reasons! I decided to check out Kirkland's. I have always like that store and its atmosphere. It's always peaceful and quiet. So, I prayed about it, and I had peace about applying. I went.
First, I looked around the store. It's all Christmassy in there right now. I love it! Christmas is always the best time to look in stores. They have all their Christmas decorations up, and the entire mood of the store just seems more cheerful. It feels like the stores themselves are happy, and I should be, too!
When I finished looking around the store, I went up to the front desk and asked for an application. The lady gave me the application, stating that they were only hiring for nights and weekends. I took the application and went out to my truck. I had conveniently remembered to bring my clipboard with me, and I remember feeling so proud of myself that I had something to write on! (Yes, I am a dork.) Still, I quickly filled out the application (because of my clipboard), and I took it back into the store.
This was a windy day. You know our state song? "O------klahoma, where the WIND COMES SWEEPING DOWN THE PLAIN..." It's true. Everyone else in the U.S. (and maybe abroad?) can rest assured that they have not been duped by a musical. The wind in Oklahoma is ... pretty much constant. That morning, the wind was definitely sweeping down the plain! It actually came barreling through, catching the door as I was trying to get into the store. It swept so hard that I couldn't get the door closed at all... and the wind started sweeping through Kirkland's window display! It was all I could do to hold onto the door (along with my application) to keep the door from opening all the way and slamming against the glass outside. Meanwhile, half of the window display fell down. I felt awful.
Once the wind died back down, I began to pick up some of the display. One of the workers (the one that gave me the application) was hovering, so I decided to step out of the way and let her do her job. After I handed the application to her co-worker, I left. I still felt bad, but after I thought it through, I decided that I did what I knew to do: hold the door. It is amazing how God created our minds. I love it when our education takes over our impulses. I love how our minds can be trained. The entire time I was holding onto the door, I could almost hear my dad telling me, "Hold on to that door!" It's what he said to me every time I got out of one of the family cars on a windy day while I was growing up (It's probably what every father says to their kids on a windy day in OK!). I also had the knowledge that glass doors like the one I was holding are expensive to repair and/or replace (thanks to a former job of mine). It would cost more to repair that door than it would to replace the entire window display (let alone the half that fell down).
While I walked away feeling silly (and with yet another great and sort of embarrassing story to tell) and knowing that they probably marked my application with a giant red 'X' after I left (because I have never heard from them), I am sure that I did what was right. I did what I knew to do. And when I finally came to that realization, the silliness fell away, and I thought, "That's kind of how it is with Biblical principles."
When life starts to get messy and everything around you starts to fall, do what you know to do: Hold onto the Word. AND DON'T LET GO! Because whatever minor damage you see around you right now is nothing compared to what it could have been if you had let go. Hold on tight to the Word! Don't let go!
This week: Find a promise in the Bible that directly relates to whatever situation you find yourself in. Take that promise and HOLD ONTO IT!
